Cancer

Cancer A healthy body is able to produce cells to keep replacing the ones lost. These cells make up the building blocks of a person's healthy immune system. Cancer is an illness that affects the way the cells multiply and grow within the body. This type of illness produces more cells than the body needs, and can cause a growth (tumor) to form. These tumors can either be malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous). The only way to determine if the tumor is indeed cancer, is to have a doctor perform a series of test for diagnosis. Unless the cancer is detected very early, the illness may spread to different parts of the body. However, different cancers are usually named by the location of the original tumor in the body. Treatment and prognosis of cancer depends on different factors: the stage of the cancer, the location of the cancer and if the cancer has spread. The doctor will plan accordingly after the patient has been completely tested and a diagnosis has been made. However, there are instances where early stages of cancer cannot even be detected by a patient because the symptoms are sometimes small or non-existent. Even though cancer has many different symptoms and affects people in different ways, some of the most widely seen reactions seem to be discomfort after eating, changes in bowel or urine movements, feeling weak or extremely tired, weight gain or loss for no reason, and a hard time swallowing. The earlier any of these symptoms are diagnosed and treated, the better the prognosis. For diagnosis purposes, there are different lab tests that a doctor may perform. This could be from the blood, urine, and other fluids that are in the body. This is an effective way to test because it determines high amount of substances in the body that can lead to cancer and be life threatening. Imaging is another form of diagnosis that is effective because it allows the doctors to see the actual size and location of the tumor. This can be done by common practices such as x-ray, CT scan, or ultrasound. In most cases, doctors find it helpful to perform a biopsy. A biopsy is a procedure that takes an actual piece of tissue or liquid from the tumor. This sample is then sent to the lab to get a proper diagnosis. Biopsies can be done through needle, endoscope or surgery. The different stages in cancer are factored by how big the tumor is. The later the stage of the cancer is, the bigger the tumor. The diagnosis process mentioned above is the best way to determine the stage. There is a plethora of information and research being done for cancer treatment. Some of the treatments, however, have been around for many years and prove to be effective. Some of these treatments include chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery to remove the tumor and/or lump. It is important that the patient receive a second opinion to make sure the treatment process is suitable for the condition. There are also clinical trials for new medical for cancer treatment, as well as alternative therapies that do not require any drugs that can assist in making the patient more comfortable. These methods should be used in conjunction with medications and treatments that the doctor initially prescribes.
