Surgery Component of Mesothelioma Treatment Plan Deemed Effective in Study

A specific type of surgery performed as a component of a treatment plan designed for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma was deemed effective prior to chemotherapy treatment by a study presented at the 2009 European Multidisciplinary Conference in Thoracic Oncology.

The surgical procedure known as a pleurectomy/decortication (a type of surgery involving the removal of the outermost lining surrounding the lungs) was evaluated in the study.

The study examined the procedure in conjunction with chemotherapy and radiation in a trimodal treatment approach.

A team of professionals including Dr. Servet Bölükbas and Dr. Horst Schmidt Kliniken designed the study to test the effectiveness of pleurectomy/decortication as the surgical component in malignant pleural mesothelioma treatment rather than pneumonectomy (removal of a lung).

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare cancer almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure. Patients with the disease typically demonstrate symptoms several decades after initial exposure occurred, allowing the cancer to progress to later developmental stages.

A multimodal therapy approach using two or more methods of treatment is often recommended for mesothelioma patients.

Thirty-five patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma were enrolled in the study over a five-year period from November 2002 through October 2007.

Patients underwent the pleurectomy/decortications procedure prior to four chemotherapy sessions (using cisplatin and pemetrexed) and radiation to the chest wall and mediastinum (a group of structures in the thorax) approximately four to six weeks following the surgery.

Approximately 94 percent of the patients completed the treatment regimen.

The results from the study were reported May 3, 2009. The one-year survival rate was 75 percent with a median survival rate of 33.2 months. The two-year survival rate was 61 percent with the three-year survival rate reported at 43 percent.

The researchers concluded that the use of pleurectomy/decortication as the surgical component in a multimodal treatment plan using chemotherapy and radiation demonstrated positive survival results and morbidity and warrants additional testing.

Absestos Verdict in New Hampshire Reversed

The New Hampshire Supreme Court has reversed a decision denying a former Anheuser-Busch brewery worker benefits after he developed an asbestos-related lung condition.

George Gamas worked at the brewery in Merrimack, New Hampshire for over two decades.

An appeals board for worker’s compensation rejected Mr. Gamas’ attempt to collect workman’s compensation benefits, stating that he had waited too long to file a complaint.

But now, the New Hampshire Supreme Court has reversed that decision, and the case will now go under review.

The Supreme Court stated that even though Mr. Gamas didn’t file his complaint until 2006, he effectively put the company on notice two years earlier when he spoke to an Anheuser-Busch lawyer for a separate civil suit.

Deadly asbestos can be found in many older buildings, lurking in pipe and boiler insulation or floor and ceiling tiles. Asbestos can break into fibers small enough to be inhaled. Asbestos inhalation has been linked to the deadly cancer mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is rare, but very aggressive. Asbestos can also cause lung cancer and asbestosis, a chronic inflammation and scarring of the lungs.

Many workers around the nation are at risk for developing asbestos related-illnesses. Professions such as mechanics, teachers, miners, and shipyard workers are at an elevated risk.

Former School Building Asks for Asbestos Removal

The village of Waverly is still working to secure a closing date for the purchase of the old school building, which is expected to cost approximately $290,000.

Village officials have chosen the firm Hunt Engineers to conduct the asbestos testing at the former school building. It has been reported that it will cost the village $3,909 to pay for Hunt to conduct the tests.

This project is part of a maximum $2.9 million project passed by voters through a December referendum.

The former Ithaca Street School will undergo any needed asbestos abatement and renovations in order to transform the building from a school house into a new village hall.

These areas of the building were previously identified as possible asbestos sources during an engineering report that was conducted by Hunt Engineers.

Trustee Jerry Sinsabaugh explained that the engineering firm will primarily be looking at the building's floor tiles and pipe joints.

Asbestos abatement is important during renovation in order to protect workers and average citizens from being exposed to the deadly substance. Asbestos, when inhaled, can lead to medical conditions including pleural mesothelioma, a rare but aggressive form of cancer.

Asbestos was once a common component in building materials, including pipe insulation, floor and ceiling tiles, textured paints, popcorn ceilings, and even siding. Despite the institution of strict asbestos regulations in the early eighties, asbestos materials are still found in over 35 million homes, commercial buildings and schools nationwide.

Jon Matthews could survive the year after Gambler with terminal cancer wins thousands

By David Wilkes

Jon Matthews: The terminal cancer patient stands to win £35,000  When doctors told Jon Matthews he had cancer, he asked what his odds were of surviving another three years.

And then he decided to put a £300 bet on it at the bookies.

In an extraordinary wager, bookmakers William Hill agreed to let him place a bet that he would outlive doctors' predictions.

Despite originally being given just months to live, he has already won the first stage of his bet, which could see him net a total of £20,000.

By surviving one year at odds of 50-1, defying medical opinion, his £100 stake won him £5,000.

And he is just weeks away from winning the second, identical bet, which will pay out another £5,000 on June 1.

A third £100, this time placed at odds of 100-1, will scoop Mr Matthews £10,000 if he survives to June 1, 2010.

Yesterday the father of one, who suffers from mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos, said: 'These wins are a huge incentive to stay alive.

'In a way it's a shame the bet is only valid for three years because the way I feel right now I'm indestructible.'

Doctors at Harefield Hospital, North-West London, told him in June 2006 after lung surgery that there was nothing more they could do for him.

They even warned him not to make plans for that Christmas, but in 2007 he placed the bet.

'I slowly started feeling better,' said Mr Matthews, of Milton Keynes.'

'I gave myself an incentive by placing a bet on how long I would outwit modern medicine. William Hill staff checked all the facts out before giving me odds.

Relay for Life set for Friday in Delaware

By Patricia Breakey
Delhi News Bureau

DELHI _ The seventh annual Delaware County Relay for Life begins at 6 p.m. Friday, and organizers are hoping the event will hit the $146,000 goal, which will bring the total raised in seven years to $1 million.

This year, the Delaware County Relay has been selected as an enrollment site for Cancer Prevention Study-3. Enrollment will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at the American Legion Fields in Delhi.

The American Cancer Society's Department of Epidemiology and Surveillance Research is inviting men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have no personal history of cancer to join the historic research study.

The purpose of Cancer Prevention Study-3 is to better understand the lifestyle, behavioral, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer, and to ultimately eliminate cancer as a major health problem for this and future generations, presenters said.

Ania Stilwell, American Cancer Society spokeswoman, said the Delhi Relay was chosen because it has a large turnout and is a successful rural Relay.

"It is not an exaggeration to say the American Cancer Society is the only organization likely to be able to successfully recruit and retain such a large-scale population for cancer research," said Susan Johnson, the American Cancer Society senior director of events manager.

Participants must be willing to make a long-term commitment to the study. They will be asked to complete a brief written survey, provide a waist measurement and give a small blood sample at the enrollment site.

After that, follow-up surveys will be sent to participants' homes on a regular basis over the next few decades to update health-behavior information.

Researchers will use the data from the Cancer Prevention Study to build on evidence from a series of American Cancer Society studies that began in the 1950s and involved hundreds of thousands of volunteer participants.

Mesothelioma suit change approved

By Mike Ward | Monday, April 20, 2009, 01:07 PM

A bill that could make it easier for a plaintiff to recover damages in asbestos lawsuits involving mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, was approved in final form today by the Texas Senate.

The approved version includes an amendment that was designed to partly mollify critics.

The vote was 20-10.

The passage of Senate Bill 1123 by Sen. Robert Duncan, R-Lubbock, marks a rare victory for trial lawyers in the Upper Chamber, in a legislature that under Republican control has generally been unfriendly to those who file lawsuits for more than a decade.

The measure now goes to the House, where its future remains uncertain.

Hermantown man honored for work on WLSSD board

By: News Tribune, Duluth News Tribune

Dick Holt of Hermantown attended his last Western Lake Superior Sanitary District meeting on Monday night after serving 17 years on the agency’s

citizens board.

Holt retired after the meeting and was honored with a proclamation for his service for the sanitary district, which oversees sewage treatment and garbage for the greater Duluth area.

Holt said he became involved in the issue of wastewater as Hermantown development expanded to areas not covered by sewer service.

“This group has done some great things for the environment over the years,” Holt said. “It’s been a wonderful experience for me.”

Holt, 70, a former city councilor who also served on the Hermantown utility commission, is a lifelong Hermantown resident. He has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, a fatal lung ailment.

Holt’s position will be filled by an election among city councilors and township officials from the geographic district that he served, including Hermantown and Proctor.
